The lake will not yet reopen this spring or summer.
For now, Tanfield Lodge Lake will remain closed for fishing. Christopher reached the decision after long and careful consideration while continuing to assess the lake and its ecosystem.
The fishery will publish further news when there is a meaningful change.
Reopening postponed, possibly until March 2026
The fishery confirmed it would remain closed for the 2025 season after little activity from the fish. Maintaining the lake’s reputation for naturally grown, quality trout remained the priority.
Environment Agency tests identify pollution
Testing ruled out disease and indicated pollution affecting the spring-water sources. Because the springs travel through wide limestone layers, the original source could not be readily traced.
Further tests and more patience
The Environment Agency carried out additional fish examinations and laboratory testing while the lake remained closed.
